Until the 1970's, this exceptionally rare Yellow flowering form of strelitzia was seen only in isolated instances around the world.

Following work carried out by then Curator of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, John Winter, which involved intensive selection and hand pollinating, Kirstenbosh had built up a small supply of plant and seed material such that by 1994 it was ready for limited release to Horticulture. Initially named "Kirstenbosch Gold" it was then renamed in honour of Nelson Mandela.
