Lytocaryum Image
Lytocaryum is a genus of palms that originates in South America, and due to its natural habitat at altitudes between 500 and 2500 metres is cold tolerant to approximately -4 degrees centigrade.

The most notable of species within the genera is the Wedding palm (Lytocaryum weddellianum). Other common names are Miniature Coconut and Weddell's Palm. Formerly this palm was classified in the genus Cocos because of its resemblance to Cocos nucifera, but was re-classified to Syagrus and then to Lytocaryum where it remains today.

When flowered, fruits are edible with similar taste characteristics to the coconut we are all familiar with.

Growing conditions dictate a requirement for moist well drained soils. Over watering or continually soggy soils will rot roots and harm the plant.
