The underlying colour of each Clivia flower is yellow and is produced by carotinoid compounds. Normally, the plant will produce compounds known as Anthocyanins which give rise to the varying orange tones that overlay the yellow of the base colour and which makes the flower colour appear orange. The underlying yellow can often be seen in the throat of the flower. When there occurs an interruption to the production pathways of the Anthocyanins, the underlying carotinoid pigments are then seen as a yellow/cream clivia.
