Clivia seeds germinate spontaenously and can even be found within the berry and showing considerable leaf and root growth.

The series of images here show: A dish of germinated seedlings prior to tubing up; a seed showing just the germinating point; development of the first leaf and root of seedlings with light Anthocyanins and one with marked darker colouration. The last image shows a size comparison with a pen tip adjacent to the first leaf.

Clivia will, on average, produce approximately 4 leaves per year and flower when the plant has produced some 13 leaves. The leaf quantity is simply an indication of the 'energy level' within the plant needed to produce the first set of buds to visible flowering. The plant may produce a set of buds beside the apical meristem every 4 leaves, but not all these buds develop to flowering.
