Named rivularis because the palm is often found beside water courses where roots have more than adequate moisture, this palm is suited to those areas of garden where moisture is naturally abundant, clean and fresh. The foliage, when moisture, magnesium and nitrogen are well supplied, will look dark green and lush but take on a yellow hue if without or low on these especially magnesium.

Rivularis is a relatively fast growing palm but spends its early years thickening the trunk and producing copious numbers of fronds. Once established with a ground level trunk as thick as 200mm in diameter, the palm then starts lengthening the trunk during growth. The effect of the above is that for its early years, the palm provides an excellent screen to about 3 meters high and in width, and after, becomes a stately tall palm with up to 15 meters of trunk.

Mature specimens produce copious quantities of small red seeds but may not commence seed production for 15-20 years depending on environmental factors.
